1) Why Romance? Did you choose this genre or were you ‘chosen’ by it?
Both actually. Although I loved great stories in many genres, I didn’t read much until after graduating high school. One cold winter day I walked two blocks to my local library and browsed through aisles of books. The stories that captured my interest were Romance
novels by LaVyrle Spencer and Kathleen Woodiwiss. I took the books home, read them, and fell in love with the genre. There began my weekly visits to the library and my Romance reading obsession. Those novels sparked a deep desire in me to write that kind of compelling once-in-a-lifetime love story, which ultimately resulted in my award-winning historical romance Shades of Honor—the first book in my bestselling Grayson Brothers series. So I chose the Romance genre and it chose me.
2) Is there a romance author, living or dead, who inspires you particularly?
LaVyrle Spencer’s storytelling, and the way she brings her characters to life in the pages of her fabulous books, inspired me to want to write those same deep, beautiful stories about decent people who work hard and love deeply. Now I’m inspired by any authors with great writing and stories that are deep and meaningful.
Now that I’ve transitioned from traditional publishing to independently publishing my books, I’m also inspired by other indie authors who have huge success publishing their indie books (Amanda Hocking, E L James, Tina Folsom, Bella Andre, and Barbara Freethy to name just a few).
3) Please, tell us about your latest book and, if you can, about your future projects.
My latest project is a continuation of my bestselling Grayson Brothers series:
Book One: Meet Radford Grayson and the Grayson family in RITA Award-winning SHADES OF HONOR. The one woman he can’t have is the only woman he wants.
Book Two: Continue the series with Kyle Grayson in THE LONGING—a Romantic Times 4 1/2 star Top Pick! A marriage of convenience…and intoxicating desire. To save their marriage he must show her every shade of love.
Book Three: Boyd Grayson makes the most of his playboy charm in the Amazon bestseller LIPS THAT TOUCH MINE. A charming rogue…an abused woman. She greeted him with her gun—Can he disarm her with his love?
Book Four: Meet sexy sheriff Duke Grayson in the Amazon bestseller KISSING IN THE DARK. A woman in danger with a hidden past. To protect her, he would risk everything—his badge…his heart.
Book Five: SLEIGH OF HOPE (A Grayson Brothers Christmas)is a novella about Adam Grayson. A boy learns about love, the spirit of giving, and what it means to become a man of integrity. Typically, my romance novels are for adult readers, but SLEIGH OF HOPE is a
family-friendly, deeply emotional Christmas story that reviewers say is “Bound to become a classic.”
My latest project,LEAVE IT FOR THE RAIN, is Adam Grayson’s adult love story.
A once-in-a-lifetime love. She couldn’t remember. He couldn’t forget. Best friends
since childhood, Adam Dearborn Grayson (adopted into the Grayson family) and Rebecca Grayson share a love like no other—until a tragic accident steals Rebecca’s memory just weeks before their wedding day and leaves her broken. Devastated that his beautiful fiancée and best friend doesn’t remember their tender past or passionate plans for the future, Adam is determined to help her heal. But first he must win her love all over
As an author, the idea of having a deep and passionate love swept away by amnesia is a storyline that has always intrigued me. I am excited to share LEAVE IT FOR THE RAIN with my readers early summer 2014.
4) How was your writing journey? Was it difficult to find an agent and get published?
Getting published was actually easy—after I had written a book worthy of being published.
It took me five years and a gazillion revisions to write Shades of Honor. This was my first attempt at writing a novel. I had everything to learn (dramatic story structure, creating real, multi-faceted characters, writing scenes with rich description and deep emotion…and developing many other skills of the writing craft), and I questioned my abilities every single day.
The only time I didn’t stress over getting published was when I slipped deep into the story-world and forgot time and place and…me.
During those years, I solicited many critiques and revised ruthlessly until my book was the absolute best I could write. Then I submitted to five agents, three of whom offered to represent me. I chose an agent and quickly received offers for Shades of Honor from two
publishers. I signed a two-book deal with St. Martin’s Press, and later published the second two books of this series with Leisure Books (Dorchester Publishing), the same publisher who originally offered to buy Shades of Honor. Shades of Honor won the Golden Heart and RITA Awards from Romance writers of America, as well as other industry honors and awards, and my indie edition (ebook) has been an Amazonbestseller for two years.
Unfortunately, my career was interrupted for several years when I spiraled into chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) in 2005, which explains the long time gap between Kissing in the Dark and Sleigh of Hope. I’m happy to report that I’ve fully recovered my health and am
5) What’s your opinion about this Ebook revolution?
I think the ebook revolution is wonderful! I thought I would never give up my paperback books, but I’m totally in love with my Kindle Fire HDX 7 and enjoy reading on it. I thought I’d never leave traditional publishing, but I couldn’t be happier about my decision to do so.
Being an indie author gives me the freedom to write what I like and what readers want to read! I can publish books more quickly and create covers that don’t make me want to pull my hair out. Lol. I can actually fix errors and not have to wait until the next print run. My books are always available and are not pulled off the store shelves six weeks after the book was released. There are just so many positives to the ebook revolution and I’m grateful to be on the leading edge with other successful indie authors. I send out hugs and deepest gratitude to my worldwide readers for their wonderful reviews and enthusiastic support of my books.
6) Nowadays many publishers expect their authors to use Social media a lot to promote their books. Many authors, on the other hand, would prefer to write only, without being distracted by digital trivialities: what are your thoughts?
It would be so much easier to play online all day than to write books, which is the hardest and most rewarding thing I’ve ever done, but that’s not reality. It takes an incredible amount of focus for me to write a book. I need to dive deep into the project and stay there until the book is finished. That intense level of focus requires that I avoid the temptation to jump on Facebook and chat all day with readers, family, and friends. In a perfect world an author would be available to connect with readers every day and still release a new book every 3-4 months.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for most authors, which leads to my parting question for readers: How do you feel about an author not being available to respond to email or Facebook comments because she/he is working on their next book? Is it okay for authors to disappear for a few months at a time because they are working on a new book for you to read? I genuinely would like to know your thoughts on this so please share here or send to me via the contact link on my website www.wendylindstrom.com
It’s been my pleasure and an honor connecting with each of you and I hope our paths will cross again here in cyberspace. Peace and warmest wishes to all.
