Jennifer Jakes for Lost in Romance

by Louisa Klein

1) Why Romance? Did you choose this genre or were you ‘chosen’ by it?
Is there any other genre? LOL  For me, the answer is no. I’m a die-hard romantic who started reading Harlequin Romance when I was 11. Those wonderful stories took me all over the world on the most romantic adventures ever! So I’d have to say I was chosen.
2) Is there a romance author, living or dead, who inspires you particularly?
Actually I’d have to say 2 of them. First, Patricia Pellicane who wrote adventurous Historical Westerns in the 90s. Her stories were spicy and full of travel, alpha males and spunky heroines – she was ahead of her time, in my opinion. Then, Emma Holly, because once I read her erotic romances I knew exactly what I wanted to write. So now I combine my love of Historical Westerns and Erotic Romance.
3) Please, tell us about your last book and, if you can, about your future projects.
My last book was a short Novella – and a step outside of my Westerns. TWICE IN A LIFETIME is story set in 1768 aboard a pirate ship – a peek at my other love.
I’m currently working on another Historical Western, ALASKAN HEAT, set in 1898 Alaska during the gold rush.
4) How was your writing journey? Was it difficult to find an agent and get published?
I sometimes duck as I say this, but it was a short journey. I’d been writing about 3 or 4 years when my novel, RAFE’S REDEMPTION, started winning writing contests, then finaled in the 2010 RWA Golden Heart.  I sold that year.
I don’t have an agent though, and I’m not looking for one.
5) What’s your opinion about this Ebook revolution? Would you consider the indie route?
I think it’s wonderful. It offers authors (and readers) more options.  Even with RAFE’S REDEMPTION award winning history and it’s final in the GH, agents and NYC editors said a Western wasn’t sellable/marketable – that readers still just wanted Regency Romance.
When The Wild Rose Press – a print first but also e-publisher – jumped at the chance to publish RAFE, I knew they saw what I did. That readers want options as  much as authors do. RAFE’S REDEMPTION came out in print and e-book in Feb. 2011 and went on to Win ROMANCE OF THE YEAR in Deep In The Heart Of Romance. It also Finaled for Romance of the Year in Love Western Romances competition and in Sizzling Hot Romances.
In Nov. of 2011, I tried my hand at the Indie Route and self-published TWICE IN A LIFETIME through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. I wanted to see what it was like as this is becoming very popular with even the NY Times best selling authors self-pubbing their back-list titles. I’ve found the experience wonderful. I decided to sell TWICE for .99 cents since it’s a short novella and have had wonderful response from readers.
I haven’t decided what path I will take with my Alaska story. I might offer it to a publishing house, or I might self-publish.
6) Nowadays many publishers expect their authors to use Social media a lot to promote their books. Many authors, on the other hand, would prefer to write only, without being distracted by digital trivialities: what are your thoughts?
Without a doubt, Social Media will eat-up writing time. But it is now just part of being an author. The key is finding balance. When I have a new release I do try to be online to let readers know it’s out there. Otherwise, I am on FaceBook and Twitter some, but I get the most enjoyment
from talking with readers on my blog. On Mondays I have Man Candy Monday and post a delicious picture and on Fridays I host a guest author and usually have a giveaway.
Info about the author:
After trying several careers—everything from a beautician to a dump truck driver—Jennifer finally returned to her first love, writing. Maybe it was all those Clint Eastwood movies she watched growing up, but in her opinion there is no better read than a steamy western historical. Married to her very own hero, she lives on fifteen acres along with two beautiful daughters, three spoiled cats, three hyper dogs and one fat rabbit. During the summer she does Civil War re-enacting and has found it a great research tool, not to mention she has continued appreciation for her microwave and hot water heater.
Her debut novel, RAFE’S REDEMPTION, was a RWA Golden Heart Finalist and Won BEST ROMANCE 2011 at DITHR.
